Actual Sunlight

Actual Sunlight is a short interactive story developed by Will O’Neill that was originally released in 2013 but after a successful indiegogo campaign the game gained new life with original art and music. It offers a glimpse into the life of Evan Winter and his struggle with depression. It’s a different type of game,if one at all, that plays more like a short story that deals with mature topics such as loneliness, debt and suicide. Actual Sunlight isn’t a ‘fun’ game but rather a linear story the player unfortunately cannot deviate from.

The Ice-Bound Concordance

First Impressions

The Ice-Bound Concordance is a surreal adventure into a world that may not be so far into the future.  I looked up very little about this game before jumping in and I recommend you do too.  If you are at all intrigued by the first impression section, do not read this full review; simply go get the free app and try it out.

Darkest Dungeon

First Impressions

One of the first things in the game is a bit of text that says "Darkest Dungeon is about making the most out of a bad situation," and that seems to be true. The initial setting and story are very dark and foreboding. It seems like something akin to Dark Souls, where the player is intended to feel like the game is going to be hard and unforgiving. However, that aspect is what would make someone want to play the game the most. The desire to overcome that challenge to beat a game that seems to be exceptionally difficult.

In Papers, Please, your tasks consist simply of asking a citizen for their passport and other papers, inspecting it for any discrepancies, and then either approving or rejecting them for entry to Arstotzka.

Monument Valley

First Impressions

Monument Valley is an interactive puzzle game where the player controls a click and move princess through various monumental puzzles.  The player is given very little backstory and no instruction and is just expected to interact with the environment to see what the various puzzle pieces do.

Monument Valley

My first impression of Monument Valley was that of awe. The game itself is very well made, and the animation and map implementation is amazing; those aspects mixed with the music got me hooked. I am a huge fan of puzzle games, so this caught my eye instantly. I remember first being introduced to this game from the Netflix show House of Cards. The product placement in the show made me want to dish out the money to play this game. To traverse through the map, you click on the screen to move to the intended location.
